Why You Need 5 Metrics Per Exercise

Not all exercises are created equal. A barbell squat and a plank have completely different success metrics. That’s why Workout Lab lets you track up to 5 custom metrics per exercise.

The Problem with One-Size-Fits-All

Most fitness apps assume every exercise follows the same pattern: sets × reps × weight. But what about:

  • Timed holds (planks, wall sits)
  • Distance movements (farmer’s walks, sled pushes)
  • Bodyweight progressions (where leverage matters more than added weight)
  • Cardio intervals (where heart rate and time are key)

Workout Lab’s Approach

When you create an exercise in Workout Lab, you choose which metrics matter:

Weight-Based Exercises

  • Weight
  • Reps
  • Sets
  • RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion)
  • Rest time

Timed Exercises

  • Duration
  • Sets
  • Heart rate
  • Rest time
  • Distance (if applicable)

Cardio/Conditioning

  • Duration
  • Distance
  • Pace
  • Heart rate
  • Calories

Real-World Examples

Example 1: Barbell Squat

  • Weight: 315 lbs
  • Reps: 5
  • Sets: 3
  • RPE: 8
  • Rest: 3 minutes

Example 2: Farmer’s Walk

  • Weight: 100 lbs per hand
  • Distance: 50 meters
  • Time: 45 seconds
  • Sets: 4

Example 3: Plank

  • Duration: 90 seconds
  • Sets: 3
  • Rest: 60 seconds

Setting Up Your Metrics

  1. Create a new exercise or edit an existing one
  2. Tap “Customize Metrics”
  3. Select up to 5 metrics that matter for this movement
  4. Save and start tracking

The flexibility means you can track exactly what matters for your training style, whether you’re a powerlifter, CrossFitter, or general fitness enthusiast.
